Interviewing a Nanny? Know What You Can (and Can’t) Ask.
Hiring a nanny is an employment process, which means certain interview questions can create legal risks or lead to discrimination. Keep your interview focused on the candidate’s ability to do the job.
You CAN ask about:
• Childcare experience and references
• CPR/First Aid certification
• Availability, scheduling, travel, and overnight care
• Childcare philosophy and communication style
• Driving experience (if required)
• Ability to perform the job’s essential duties
• Work authorization and willingness to complete a background check
Avoid asking about:
• Age, marital status, or whether they have children
• Pregnancy or family plans
• Race, religion, or national origin
• Disabilities or medical history
• Gender identity or sexual orientation
• Political beliefs or salary history
A simple rule to follow:
If the question isn’t directly related to the job, don’t ask it.
At Baby Love, we help families navigate every step of the hiring process—including conducting professional, legally compliant interviews that focus on what matters most: finding the right caregiver for your family.
